The nightly rate is rarely the full price.
Common extras
- Tourist or city tax: charged per person per night in many cities (Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin and many others), often paid at the hotel.
- Resort or destination fees: common in the U.S. (Las Vegas, Hawaii, Florida, New York). The U.S. FTC's rule on hotel and short-term rental pricing requires the total price including mandatory fees to be shown up front from May 2025.
- Parking, Wi-Fi, breakfast and early check-in charges.
Compare totals, not rates
- Look at the price breakdown with taxes and fees for your exact dates and guests.
- Check whether the city tax is included or paid on arrival.
