Using your home carrier abroad can be expensive unless your plan includes roaming. A travel eSIM is a digital SIM you buy online and install before you go, usually with a data-only plan for one country or a region.
The three options
| Option | Good | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier roaming | Zero setup, keep your number | Daily passes add up quickly on long trips |
| Travel eSIM | Cheap data, installed before you land | Usually data-only, no local number |
| Local physical SIM | Often cheapest per GB, local number | Store visit, ID registration in some countries |
Will an eSIM work on my phone?
- Your phone must support eSIM (most recent iPhones, Pixels and Samsung flagships do).
- It must be carrier-unlocked.
- You can keep your home SIM active for calls and texts and use the eSIM for data.
Tips
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, then activate data when you land.
- Turn off data roaming on your home line to avoid surprise charges.
- Pick a plan by days and gigabytes: maps and messaging use little; video calls and hotspotting use a lot.
- Check whether the plan allows hotspot use if you'll tether a laptop.
