Many countries require your passport to be valid for a period after your trip, often three or six months beyond your departure date. Airlines check this at boarding and can refuse to fly you.
Examples of how rules differ
- Schengen countries generally require validity of at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the area, and a passport issued within the last 10 years.
- Many countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa require 6 months.
- Some countries also require blank pages.
What to do
- Check the official government site of your destination or your own government's travel advice.
- Check transit countries too.
- Renew early; processing times can be long before summer.
